Updated 6 April 2026
Keeping your kitchen plumbing in good shape saves time, money and stress. Whether you live in Ryde or elsewhere in the PO33 area, many common issues are easy to spot and often straightforward to fix. This guide gives practical, safe advice homeowners can use before calling a tradesperson.
Common kitchen problems
- Slow or blocked sink drains
- Dripping or stiff taps
- Leaks under the sink and water stains
- Noisy pipes or knocks when taps are turned off
- Faulty dishwasher or washing machine connections
Spotting a problem early often prevents more serious damage. If you see damp patches, mould, a sudden rise in your water bill, or persistent smells, investigate right away.
Simple checks before you act
- Find your isolation valves. Most kitchen sinks have an isolation valve under the sink for the hot and cold supplies. Know where your household stopcock is too — it may be in a meter box, an airing cupboard, or outside the property.
- Look under the sink. Check the U-bend (bottle trap) and pipe joints for drips or corrosion. Keep the cupboard tidy so leaks are obvious.
- Clean the strainer. Remove food debris from the sink strainer and rinse. A blocked strainer is a common cause of slow drainage.
Clearing a blocked sink safely
If water is draining slowly or not at all, try these steps in order:
- Remove visible debris from the plughole or strainer.
- Use a plunger. Partly block any adjacent waste or overflow then plunge firmly a few times. This often dislodges soft blockages.
- Clear the U-bend. Place a bowl under the trap, undo the nut by hand or with an adjustable spanner, and empty the contents. Clean the trap thoroughly and check the rubber seals. Reassemble and test.
- Use a drain snake (hand auger) for deeper blockages, but only if you are comfortable. Insert slowly and rotate to pull out debris. Don’t use an electric auger unless you know the pipe layout.
Avoid pouring chemical drain cleaners. They can damage modern plastic pipework and are harsh on the environment. For stubborn blockages that keep returning, call a plumber to inspect the waste pipe and soil stack.
Fixing a dripping tap
A dripping tap usually means a worn washer or cartridge. Ball taps, ceramic cartridges and compression taps differ, so replacement parts vary.
Simple steps:
- Turn off the water at the isolation valves under the sink.
- Remove the tap handle and identify the cartridge or washer.
- Take the old part to a local hardware shop if you are unsure which replacement to buy.
- Reassemble carefully, turn the water back on and check for leaks.
If you are not confident, a plumber can fit a new cartridge quickly and ensure the tap is sealed correctly.
Appliances: dishwasher and washing machine tips
- Use reinforced or braided hoses for dishwashers and washing machines and inspect them annually for bulges or wear. Replace any flexible hose older than five years or showing signs of damage.
- Ensure the waste connection uses an air gap or proper trap to prevent backflow.
- Turn off the appliance isolation valve when you go away for an extended period.
Preventative maintenance
- Never pour cooking oil or grease down the sink. Let it cool and dispose of it in the bin. Grease builds up and narrows pipes.
- Use sink strainers to catch food waste and clean them daily.
- Flush the waste with hot water regularly and run the dishwasher often to keep traps clear.
- Re-seal around sinks and hobs with silicone if joints are cracked or lifting — standing water can damage cabinets.
- Clean tap aerators every few months to keep water flow even and spot early scale build up.
